Dear Parents and Carers,
With warmer weather on the way, we've received some questions about how the school will manage the heat and whether we might close at some point.
We want to reassure you that we're taking all necessary steps to keep your children safe and comfortable.
The Department for Education (DfE) guidance does not set a specific temperature at which schools must close due to hot weather. Instead, schools assess risk and implement practical measures. While partial or full closure could be considered if a severe 'Red' heat-health alert were issued by the government, we want to assure you that we are nowhere near that threshold at this time.
We understand that the school was closed for one day during an unprecedented heatwave in 2023. This decision was made after a 'Red' heat-health warning was issued, with temperatures reaching around 40 degrees Celsius. We highlight this to underscore that such closures are only considered under the most extreme circumstances, following specific government guidance.
We have plenty of sheltered areas where children can take a break from the sun, and we'll be strongly encouraging them to drink fluids throughout the day. Please help us by ensuring your child comes to school with a hat and has sunscreen applied before school each morning.
In summary, we are not currently planning to close the school, either partially or fully, as the current temperatures do not meet the extreme thresholds outlined in the DfE guidance. We will continue to monitor the weather closely and keep you updated if circumstances change.
Thank you for your understanding and support.
Kind regards,
