  • Sustrans and Cycle Derby - Active Travel Bike Repair and Safety Checks

Tue 15 Mar 2022 Mr Seargent

A HUGE thanks to Cycle Derby and Sustrans for supporting our children in Active travel once more.  The work undertaken yesterday linked well with a focus on our Curriculum DNA Threads 'Your World' and 'Your Self', linking in the benefits of an active lifestyle and the environment.

Yesterday saw a qualified mechanic repairing cycles on site for children in readiness for next week's 'Big Wheel and Walk' initiative, repairing and making safe 18 cycles for children.

Likewise, world record holder Leigh Timmis visited us once more, ably supported by Mark Smith of Cycle Derby, to launch next week's activities.  It was wonderful to see so many children keen to share their experiences around active travel.

  • Big Wheel and Walk - NEXT WEEK!

Mon 14 Mar 2022 Mr Seargent

Get set… we’re taking part in Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel 2022 (the new name for Big Pedal), the UK’s largest inter-school cycling, walking, wheeling and scooting challenge. The challenge runs from:

21 March to 1 April (NEXT WEEK Onwards)

It’s free and we would love everyone to be involved.

What do you need to do?

Encourage your child(ren) to walk, use a wheelchair, scoot or cycle to school on as many days as possible during the event. Classes will be logging journeys and our school will be included in a national leader board!

    Including everyone

We want to make sure that everyone can get involved in Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel.

We know there may be things which make it more difficult for some pupils to take part than others. If you want to discuss more about your child(ren)’s specific needs, please contact us and we will make sure that there is a way for your child to take part.

If you have to drive to school, try parking a little further away and then walking a short journey in.  This will count!!

    Why we are taking part

Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel is a great way to build physical activity in children’s daily routine which is important for their physical health and mental wellbeing.

Active school runs also help to reduce congestion and air pollution outside the school gate. A 2021 YouGov studyshowed nearly half of UK children worry about air pollution near their school. And that children thought active travel was the best away to bring down these pollution levels.

Plus there are some great prizes to be won every day if we get enough children taking part!

    Amazing Me Fundraising Day

We want to celebrate how amazing the children have been- taking part in Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel and learning about the amazing benefits of active travel and will be sharing our national ranking and scores with the children each Friday during the Big Wheel.
