  • Many thanks!

Fri 30 Jun 2017 Mr Seargent

I wanted to thank you on behalf of the teaching and support staff for the rapid improvement in reducing the number of occasions the children are arriving late to school and / or not being collected on time at the end of the school day.

It is great to see that by working in partnership, establishing clear routines and expectations for the children, more children are in school promptly and accessing learning straight away.

Your efforts are noted and appreciated.

  • Summer Fair

    Thu 29 Jun 2017
  • Sports Day - possible cancellation.

Mon 26 Jun 2017 Mr Seargent

    Forewarned is forearmed.

It looks like the weather for Tuesday and Wednesday is rain.

Earlier in the day, it looked worse, but remains poor.  I will monitor the weather tonight and tomorrow and let all parents know by end of the school day tomorrow.

We can control many things....the weather is not one of them.

    Mr Seargent

  • School finances and how you can support us to support your child

Wed 21 Jun 2017 Mr Seargent

A letter has been added to the 'Parents'  > 'letters' section of the school website as well as a hard copy being issued.

Please take your time to read this carefully.

  • Good News! External confirmation of the school's strengthening position

Tue 20 Jun 2017 Mr Seargent

Good news. External verification of good planning and outcomes.

Over the last 2 years, we have been working extensively to drive improvements across the school.  This has been a complex and dynamic process that has been scrutinised, not only by governors, but also externally. I wish to share some of the findings of the external scrutiny.

    Key Stage 1 SATS Moderation

This year, our school was selected to have its 2017 Key Stage 1 SAT outcomes and evidence moderated by the Local Authority.  This process is designed to scrutinise the school's assessment process.  In effect, analysing the outcomes and confirming they are accurate.

The school adopted a 'show it, evidence it, confirm it' approach to the process, which resulted in a confirmation that the outcomes were indeed accurate.

This is a big step for the school, as external ratification that we are accurate in our assessments is key to evidencing that we meet the needs of the pupils.  Importantly, it confirms that the improved outcomes (to be released soon!) are correct and a reflection of the hard work of staff and pupils.  Good news indeed!

Regional School Commissioner seal of approval!

SAT outcomes in 2016 resulted in the school classification of 'coasting'.  Whilst there had been improvements in progress, reading and wider attainment was identified as not yet meeting the national expectation.  This resulted in a review of the development planning and data across the school by the Regional Schools Commissioner who responded in writing to confirm that:

'[she was] satisfied that [we] have an appropriate plan in place to meet the challenges - and the capacity to deliver the improvements in a timely manner'.

In essence, this recognises that the school's plans for improvement and the steps and progress we have made are good and that the commissioner anticipates (as do we) that the improvements will be sustained.

With a successful moderation outcome for Key Stage 1 after this announcement had been made confirming raised standards, the Regional School Commissioner seal of approval further underpins the good work.

  • EYFS Balanceability

Fri 16 Jun 2017 Mr Seargent

Early Years children have this week taken part in our first 'in house' Balancability Training', led by myself and Mrs Haines.

This is one part of our 'Every Child A Rider' programme, established last year to address the need to increase physical wellbeing of pupils by ensuring that ALL children in the school can ride a bicycle.

The staff training for this programme and the bicycles used were purchased though the School Sports Funding initiative; the idea being that the school can sustain the programme by having qualified staff and all the resources needed without relying on outside agencies.

On a personal note, I must add that I had a great time (as did the children!).  Working with the EYFS children is a delightful experience and it was great to see them engage so enthusiastically, even those who found it a real challenge.

  • Meet the Author

Fri 16 Jun 2017 Mr Seargent

On Thursday 16th June, a group of children attended the Derby Book Week meet the author,.  Children in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 attended the Derby Theatre to meet and listen to Philip Reed & Sarah Mackintyre,  as well as Marcia Williams.

The event was very exciting and inspiring and it was wonderful to see the children so enthusiastically engaged.

Many thanks to Mrs Kummerfeld who organised the trip.

  • Who can you go to for help? (Assembly)

Mon 12 Jun 2017 Mr Seargent

'Asking for help'.  It's not just an offer to the children!

Today's assembly to the whole school was a reminder of who the children can go to for help.  We regularly remind the children of a range of safeguarding matters and today was such an assembly.

It focused on ensuring that children had the realisation that staff at the school were here to help and would always listen to, and support children, if they had concerns and worries.

Children were also reminded of help available from home and other adults, including access to Child Line (0800 1111).

We're also here to help you!

Whilst preparing the assembly materials, it occurred to me that we help a wide range of families in many different circumstances.  As the designated Safeguard lead, supported by the very able Mrs Froom (Learning Mentor),  we have access to support and strategies that may be of use to families.  This includes healthcare, social care and other agencies that you may not be aware of.

Should you or your family ever need help, even if it is not school related, you are free to speak to us.  Whilst we may not be able to help directly, we have access to people who may be able to.  Please speak to us.

    Mr Seargent

    Headteacher and Safeguard Lead.
